"Take a Break”

Hello friends!

We hope your spring is moving along smoothly and that you’re all remembering to slow down once in awhile to watch the miracle of new growth that’s happening all around us.

We’re looking at Blue Zones every month. These are pockets of people where individuals live much longer AND healthier than most of the rest of people on this planet. Nine different traits in their daily routine were isolated and here is number three!

Downshift.

Basically what this boils down to is that the people in Blue Zones take a break every day. What they do on the break is varied, but I think what it amounts to is that it has some meaning attached to it. Some of the groups pray, others take a moment to respect their elders, and some have happy hour. Whatever activity you choose, it should be something that you look forward to and, ideally, feels like a reward for the hard work you’ve put in so far that day. Give yourself permission to forget whatever might be stressing you out. It takes practice, but over time you can develop the ability to discipline your thoughts.

I believe this behavior contributes to health and longevity because it puts a pause on whatever might be causing you stress. Left to its own devices, ongoing, unrelenting stress can ravage the inside of your body. There is an unmistakable correlation between chronic stress and premature aging. It has to do with your hormones being out of balance and an increased level of inflammation circulating throughout your entire body. It’s never too late to start a new healthy habit. Learn from the people around the globe who can teach us something about balance and getting the most out of life. Take a break, and while you do, relax, smile and take some good deep breaths.

You’ll never regret it!
