Plant Slant

Hello everyone and Happy Summer!

In case you missed prior newsletters this year, I am reviewing, one at a time, the Power 9®Blue Zones. These are nine traits that the world’s healthiest and longest living people follow.

This month, the trait is called ‘plant slant’.

People in the Blue Zones tend to eat a lot of plant-based food, and in some cases, a tremendous variety. This isn’t to say that they are strict vegans or vegetarians, but generally their intake of animal protein is not a 50 ounce steak every night. I am a big fan of nonmeat sources of protein to be sure. I try to include some type of legume in most of my meals. Beans and lentils are the primary legumes I target. They are an excellent source of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals and other phytonutrients. For those of you concerned about these potentially harmful substances in beans called lectins, my current understanding is that if cooked, these are largely neutralized.

I feel these represent an ideal plate of food, so try to shoot for something similar to this each day and don’t be surprised if you make it to 100 years, still full of vim and vigor!
